HW market & infrastructure - projects

Below is a selection of hazardous waste market & infrastructure projects recently completed by Ascend Waste and Environment.

Hazardous waste market assessment (2017, Tellus Holdings)

Ascend Waste and Environment provided Tellus with a detailed exploration of the hazardous waste market in Australia, based on the most recent published data, as well as investigations into emerging future waste issues, lingering legacy problems and waste contaminants of growing concern. This work was carried out in the context of independently assessing ad critiquing Tellus’ business assumptions.

Spent Pot Lining project; feasibility of an agreement for clearing stockpiles (2016, Aus. gov. Department of the Environment)

Ascend Waste and Environment, along with partner Randell Environmental Consulting, conducted a detailed assessment of SPL stockpiles in Australia, the processing options available and an assessment of the feasibility of different agreement options between industry and government on SPL stockpile removal..

Hazardous waste infrastructure & data project, HWIDP (2015, Aus. gov. Department of the Environment)

Ascend Waste and Environment, along with partners Blue Environment and Randell Environmental Consulting, was commissioned to conduct the largest hazardous waste data collation and analysis project undertaken by the Australian Government. Three semi-separate projects were approached together:

1. The Hazardous Waste Infrastructure Needs and Capacity Assessment (HWIN), which:

  • projected hazardous waste arisings & fates over 20 years, by hazardous waste ‘groups’, under 3 growth scenarios
  • consulted with industry to estimate Australia’s current hazardous waste infrastructure capacity, its distribution & expected future outlook
  • combined these results to identify the extent to which current infrastructure meets future needs, considering the nature & locations of particular infrastructure.

2. The 2013 Basel report, which collected, assessed and reported jurisdictional hazardous waste data for the 2013 Basel Convention requirement.

3. The inaugural Hazardous Waste in Australia report (HWiA 2015), which provided a national report on hazardous waste data sources, arisings, historical trends, fates and a detailed analysis for 2012-13 and 2013 data.

Peer review of market assumptions (2015, confidential client)

Ascend Waste and Environment was commissioned by a confidential waste industry client to provide an independent peer review of key business assumptions relating to Australian hazardous waste market volumes, gate fee pricing, and future growth trends. This work estimated these market metrics for each state in Australia and also included an analysis of regulatory drivers and barriers as well as the construction of a detailed revenue forecasting model.

E-waste Material Flow Analysis and infrastructure assessment (2016, Sustainability Victoria)

Ascend, along with partners Blue Environment and Randell Environmental Consulting were engaged to complete a Market Flow Analysis for e-waste in Victoria, to support the Victorian Government’s consideration of banning e-waste from landfill disposal. The project also included a detailed assessment of Victorian’s e-waste recycling infrastructure capability and capacity, and a detailed evaluation of likely future technology and market trends in e-waste processing.

Market analysis and stock take of the e-waste recycling industry in Australia (2015, Aus. Gov. Department of the Environment)

Partnering with Randell Environmental Consulting, Ascend conducted an analysis of the Australian e-waste recycling market with a specific focus on a bottom-up questionnaire-based assessment of recyclers’ current and future capacity, in the event of possible policy adjustments that may result in increased recycling targets. The work included an assessment of a range of issues important to recyclers, including how Co-regulatory Arrangements performed their role in the NTCRS.
